Czech & Slovak Classical TV/Film Fairy Tales "Posters"
Ever since my childhood, I've been hugely fond of fairy tales - written, played, narrated, in any form you can imagine. There is not only great wisdom but also a wonderful poetic feel and beauty in them, whether real magic is present or not. They make you believe that despite everything bad going on around you, there is still some beauty and goodness in life and it's worth living and fighting for. It's still one of my comfort zones, a safe place that, let's face it, we all need from time to time...
A lot of them have been made into films and if you're looking for the country with the greatest tradition in making film adaptations of fairy tales, former Czechoslovakia would probably be the top contender for this post. Even after the country split in 1993, mainly the Czech Republic keeps coming up with beautiful stories every now and then, but the most legendary ones were made between the 1950s to the late 1980s and they will simply never get old...
Here is my little tribute to the most famous (and my favourite) ones that appear on the Czech and Slovak TV screens every year, especially during the Christmas holidays, for more than 60 years... <3
Princess with the Golden Star (1959) / The Proud Princess (1952)
/Princezna se zlatou hvězdou / Pyšná princezna/
The Emperor And The Golem (1952) /Pekařuv císař - Císařuv pekař/
Playing with the Devil (1957) /Hrátky s čertem/
In Czech and Slovak fairy tales and legends, the Devil often appears in the world when good people are oppressed by the bad ones, who get punished by him then.
He can still be cunning, but can never trick the good people. :)
Once Upon A Time, There Was A King (1955)
/Byl jednou jeden král/
Stick, Start Beating! (1956) /Obušku, z pytle ven!/
Crazily Sad Princess (1968) /Šíleně smutná princezna/
Prince Bajaja (1971) /Princ Bajaja/
Three Nuts For Cinderella (1973) /Tři oříšky pro Popelku/
Before Drew Barrymore enchanted us all in Ever After, there was this beauty, and it's still going strong :)
Princess Goldilocks (1973) /Zlatovláska/
The Little Mermaid (1976) /Malá mořská víla/
How To Wake A Princess (1978) /Jak se budí princezny/
The Prince And The Evening Star (1978) /Princ a Večernice/
Beauty And The Beast (1978) /Panna a netvor/
Arabela (1980-1981) (TV series)
Popolvar, The Greatest In The World (1982) /Popolvár, najväčší na svete/
The Third Prince (1983) /Třetí princ/
Salt Above Gold (1983) /Soľ nad zlato/
King Thrushbeard (1984) /Kráľ drozdia brada/
The Brave Blacksmith (1984) /O statečném kováři/
The Feather Fairy (1985) /Perinbaba/
Give The Devil His Due (1985) /S čerty nejsou žerty/
Princess Jasnenka And The Flying Shoemaker (1987)
/ O princezně Jasněnce a létajícím Ševci/
The Peacock Feather (1987) /Pávie pierko/
The Immortal Aunt (1993) /Nesmrtelná teta/
The Watermill Princess (1994) /Princezna ze mlejna/
The Angel Of The Lord (2006) /Anděl páně/
The Twelve Months (2012) /Dvanáct měsíčku/
And a little bonus at the end...
Some works of art stand the test of time, regardless of their age or country of origin.
The Russian beloved classic:
Papa Frost (1964) /Mrázik/
